Hi there, I keep getting the 401 error message when registering, is this s permanent problem and do you know of any other way to free myself of my Christian (Catholic) label please, Best regards, Roy.
Hi Roy,
I can’t seem to replicate the problem on my end. Try clearing your cookies/cache and try again.
Hi, On the defection page you say it’s optional to leave details of baptism (location, date etc) so the church can amend their records. How does that work? What records do they amend and in what way?
Regards
James
Hi James, The information is not displayed on the directory but stored in our database. The church is under no obligation to look at this site and amend its records. I very much doubt it would do so. This defection is symbolic only.
Hi Helen, i thought/hoped that maybe you submitted the register to the church and had some arrangement with them. As it is then i think the comment is a bit misleading?
Anyway, keep up the good work!
Hi James, it is and I’ll change it. I’m going to add church and parish and year to the membership directory as well. As some stage when the number of defections becomes impressive it would be a good idea to bulk send defections to particular parishes. It’s something that could be considered. Thanks for the feedback.
Hi James, those changes have been made
hi helen i’m just wondering could you help me to leave the catholic ? i am 35 and have been an atheist for many years now and i feel i need to finally get round to taking this step because both my children ( 3 & 1) are not baptised. thank you
regards Gary
Hi
I heard a couple of years ago that any organisation that had info relating to you had to hand it over to you if requested . If this is true and means that when they give you the info they no longer have it. Could this not be done with the Catholic Church.
Hi Cathal, This is probably comes under the Data Protection law. This may be an approach to take in the future but currently it has not been successful https://www.dataprotection.ie/viewdoc.asp?Docid=107&Catid=38&StartDate=1%20January%202009.
Thanks Helen
I’ll have a look at that.
Get creative – Declare Eamon Martin to be an atheist & a member of Atheist Ireland, send him a complimentary membership card, refer to him continually as a ‘card-holding atheist’, and refuse any and all attempts on his part to correct that record.
Should be fun…
Your link to the Declaration of Defection is broken.
http://www.notme.iewp-content/uploads/2014/10/DeclarationOfDefection.pdf = missing a forward slash between the “.ie” and “wp-content”
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The link is fixed now.
Hello,
I’m just inquiring whether or not there is a formal way to defect from the Catholic Church? I don’t care about their records as such but when the time of my death comes, I don’t want my body buried during a cult ritual.
Any suggestions on how to approach this would be very much welcomed.
Yours faithfully,
Graham Stewart
